IAA History

History of Interface Analysis Associates (IAA) / Usernomics

Interface Analysis Associates (IAA) started in 1993 as a partnership between myself and Dr. Leon Segal. Leon and I both graduated from the University of Illinois and subsequently worked together as Human Factors scientists and designers at NASA. We enjoyed applying our skills to the aerospace domain, but we longed to spread our passion for human factors over a larger spectrum of consumer products and domains, without limit. Our first office was located in San Mateo (thanks to Neil and Roger at Praxis Design for sharing their habitat with us) and we set out primarily to bring human factors, usability and ergonomics to the industrial design world, where form over function ruled the day.

Leon left IAA to work full-time at IDEO, one of our main clients, and I took over IAA as a sole proprietorship, moving the company to Cupertino, CA and later San Jose, CA. Leon now resides in Israel and serves as an innovation psychologist there. I highly recommend him. He is an experienced practitioner, a great innovator and an extraordinary trainer/educator/motivator. You can learn more about him at: http://www.leonsegalonline.com.

IAA has been at the current San Jose location since 1994. We have both offices and our always-busy usability testing lab there. Between then and now we have had other, additional locations, in Morgan Hill, CA and Gilroy, CA. Along the way we have had the privilege to work with over 400 clients on over 1,000 products and environments. From inventors and startups, to mid-size companies, to the Fortune 100 and government agencies--we have worked with them all. And, the product range is as wide and diverse as it gets! From aircraft cockpits, to car stereos and cell phones, to Internet security applications and consumer web sites--and everything in between. We've even designed a better box of wine! (You know, the fancy kind you drink at picnics?). In fact, we have been so busy improving user experiences (and our clients' profits and brand reputation) around the world, that we have neglected one thing from the start--our own web site. As of August 2010, we have finally spent the time (well, a week or so) to put our personal touch on the IAA web site. We hope you find it useful and usable--for both learning about IAA and learning about the human factors and ergonomics field in general.

Many people have contributed to the success of IAA. Indeed, after 17 years, we now have a long list of IAA alumni. I thank all of them for their contribution to IAA and for sharing part of their professional life with me. I hope they gained much from the unique IAA experience and my personal mentoring. Today, IAA is a long-standing and thriving small business with a solid, world-wide reputation. We wouldn't have it any other way!
